The coasts of Curaao are embellished by 38 gorgeous white-sand beaches. These sandy shores have remained one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets, providing honeymooners and couples with the perfect place to escape for their romantic getaway. You'll find that the best beaches aren't the long stretches of expansive coastline but the smaller, more intimate shores, which are less frequented by sun-worshiping tourists. Visiting Curaao's waterfronts is like having a beach all to yourself.
The island has about 38 beaches, but there are also a few places by the sea that are tucked away
in little inlets, or bocas as they are called in the Papiamentu language. These secret sands are
generally located on the east and north coasts and are more rugged than many of the more popular
beaches. The larger beaches on the island are called playas and fit the typical definition of a
sandy, Caribbean beach.
During the weekends, Curaao's beaches are most crowded, but if you visit a beach during one of the weekdays, there's a good chance you'll have these beautiful sands all to yourself. The majority of the island's beaches are located on the south coast where the waters are calm compared to the rough surf of the Atlantic Ocean on the northern shores. Swimming on the island's Atlantic side is difficult, so you may not want to consider braving these wild waves.
Some of the best beaches are located in Westpunt, or West Point, fittingly named for its western location on the island. Although all of the beaches on Curaao share the same crystalline blue waters, each one has its own unique appeal and characteristics. Some beaches, such as Westpunt, are encompassed by towering rock cliffs. Here, acrobatic divers perform aerial dives from the towering cliffs into the turquoise waters, entertaining awe-struck beachgoers below. Daibooibaai also has giant rock cliffs along its shores and is a quiet mellow cove, perfect for a romantic evening stroll or peaceful afternoon sunbathing.
Many other Curaao beaches are flourishing with vividly colored, exotic vegetation and are perfect for photographing, like the picturesque shores of Knip Bay Beach. Along with tropical flora, this beach also features sparkling blue waters and smooth white sands, as well as convenient beach amenities like changing facilities and a casual restaurant. During the weekend, vacationers can enjoy live entertainment from musicians and dancers, which gives the beach a party atmosphere.
Blauwbaai is Curaao's largest and most spectacular beach. The opal sands at Blauwbaai are captivating, and the water here is a brilliant blue. To enter this paradise, beachgoers will have to pay a small entrance fee, but it is worth it. There are convenient facilities at this beach, including showers and changing facilities, as well as places for shade where beachgoers can go to escape the hot island sun. Most beaches on Curaao that charge an admittance fee have restaurant establishments as well as other traveler-friendly amenities.
No matter which beach you decide to visit, the snorkeling and scuba diving is generally good off of all the island's coast, so don't forget to bring your gear for some great underwater exploration.
